Hey hardware people, tell me if this sounds familiar. You’re recording a beat from a drum machine using its built-in sequencer. You hit record on the DAW and the drum machine starts as well, but the audio you end up with is all over the place, with some drums before the beat, and some after. Sloppiest drummer ever? Nope, just latency and jitter, by-products of using multiple MIDI clocks at the same time.

The solution to this is to involve an independent MIDI clock device to help keep everything – drum machines, external sequencers, synths with onboard sequencers, grooveboxes – in line. Nome II from Sim’N Tonic is one such clock. It sits between your DAW and hardware and helps ensure that everything stays in time. It sobers up the drummer in your drum machine, in other words.

Sim’N Tonic uses a proprietary plugin to keep everything running tightly between your DAW and external sequencers with bi-directional control. Called U-SYNC, it’s just been updated to version 2.0.

U-SYNC 2.0

Developed in partnership with Reliq Instruments, the company behind the Reliq sequencer, U-SYNC 2.0 brings some improvements to the software, increasing usefulness and adding compatibility to more DAWs.

First, new functionality. U-SYNC 2.0 comes equipped with latency auto-detect. Record your hardware once, play it back through the plugin for analysis, and U-SYNC 2.0 will set the compensation. Also new for version two are presets, so you only have to do that setup one time per device.

Have more than one device? Now you can use U-SYNC with several devices at once, with a unique plugin instance possible for each clock device you’re controlling, such as a Nome II or Reliq.

In terms of compatibility, U-SYNC now brings clock-sync support to Windows machines. Additionally, Reason can now run U-SYNC and work with Nome II or Reliq. Sim’N Tonic is promising more DAW compatibility soon.
