Adding a new synth, drum machine, or groovebox to your music production setup can really elevate your creative process. It presents you with a new way of thinking that isn’t accessible from your DAW. Although this change also introduces a learning process, this unfamiliarity adds an unexpected element that can inspire new ideas.

Deals Of The Week: 16% off the AKAI MPC One+

The MPC One+ is a standalone beat creation station that runs its own dedicated MPC OS software using multi-core ARM processing technology with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage, which is expandable via SD card and USB drives. The interface is centered around the 7-inch multi-touch display and 16 pressure-sensitive RGB pads with aftertouch.

For music creation, there is a range of virtual instruments onboard. This includes the Electric instrument for electric piano and organ sounds, as well as the Tubesynth and Bassline softsynths. Also included is the AIR FX Suite, with over 100 effects and processing tools. Meanwhile, stem separation is also available as an optional extra.

Deals of the Week: 12% off the Behringer LM Drum

The LM Drum is Behringer’s recreation of several classic LinnDrum drum machines from the 1980s, reimagined in an affordable modern format. Using digital 8-bit and 12-bit sampling and analogue filters (3320 VCF) and VCAs (2164 VCA) based on the original specifications, the LM Drum carries the same character as the legendary drum machines it’s inspired by.

Besides a collection of 109 pre-loaded drum sounds from the LM-1, LM-2, and Linn 9000, the LM Drum allows you to load .WAV samples with the accompanying SynthTribe software and assign them to the 16 velocity-sensitive trigger pads. What’s more, you can also record samples live through the mono line input, and then playback through the 8/12-bit engine.

For creating drum patterns and arrangements, there is a fully-featured 64-step pattern sequencer with poly-meter, step-repeat, note-repeat, track-mute, and track-solo. Meanwhile, there is a Wave Designer function for shaping the envelope of each drum voice and 16 individual audio outs for flexible external routing.

Deals of the Week: 22% off the Novation Summit

The Novation Summit is a 16-voice hybrid synthesizer with 2-part multitimbrality that uses a similar architecture to the Peak desktop synth. For sound generation, it uses three flexible Numerically Controlled Oscillators (NCOs) per voice, which allow traditional subtractive waveforms, as well as wavetable and FM synthesis.

In addition, the Summit gets its character from a resonant analogue multimode filter section, analogue VCAs, and three distortion stages: pre-filter, post-filter, and global. For creating expressive rhythms, there is a built-in arpeggiator and a selection of digital effects, including chorus, delay, and reverb, for adding width and movement to your sounds.

One of the Summit’s strengths is its extensive modulation capabilities, with a 16-slot modulation matrix, two per-voice LFOs and two global LFOs, as well as three DAHDSR envelopes per voice. The Summit is also equipped with a 61-key semi-weighted keyboard with aftertouch and dedicated “Animate” buttons to trigger modulation while performing live.
