Neumann KH 310 II and KH 350: New 3-Way Monitors with Double the Power

Neumann KH 310 II and KH 350: New 3-Way Monitors with Double the Power

The Neumann KH 310 II and KH 350 are two new 3-way additions to Neumann’s Klein + Hummel monitor range designed to sit just below the flagship KH 420.

Although Sennheiser acquired Klein + Hummel studio monitors in 2005 and later merged the brand with Neumann, the legendary 3-way active monitor designs originate from the late 1960s.

The KH 310 II and KH 350 have relatively similar designs, with the same size drivers, including an 8.25-inch woofer (300W), a 3-inch midrange driver (160W), and a 1-inch tweeter (125W), and the same 3-way 585W amplification system with crossovers at 700 and 1,700 Hz.

Because they also have the same 32-bit DSP systems, the KH 310 II and KH 350 also have the same connectivity options, including a balanced XLR input, a digital AES3id coaxial BNC input, a digital AES3id coaxial BNC output for daisy-chaining, and an RJ45 Ethernet port for use with the MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment software.

Where the two monitor designs differ fundamentally is that the KH 310 II uses a sealed enclosure, which makes it more accurate, while the KH 350 uses a bass-reflex enclosure for extended low-end response down to 27 Hz. In addition, the KH350 has a larger MMD waveguide for a wider sweet spot.

In short, the KH 310 II is a highly precise and analytical monitor with a 5 dB headroom increase compared to its predecessor. The KH 350, on the other hand, is a far better “client” monitor, and a more compact and affordable version of the flagship KH 420. Depending on the type of work you do, either option could prove to be an invaluable addition to your setup. However, as users of the KH 310 have complained for years about its apparent lack of power, we are most curious to see the response to this new version.
