The Empirical Labs ParaDyn plugin is a precise multiband processor that combines parametric EQ with two versatile dynamics modules.
Empirical Labs is one of the most respected manufacturers of studio hardware, famous for the Distressor, which has been in almost every pro studio since the late 1990s. Meanwhile, its software division has been constantly busy over the past decade, creating plugins that enhance DAW workflows with unique features and elements borrowed from the hardware line.
Empirical Labs ParaDyn
ParaDyn has a parametric EQ from the BIG FrEQ plugin, divided into four sections, two of which have dynamics processing with three distinctive modes. The EQ bands on the last three sections are particularly flexible because you can adjust the width of the boost or cut being made and change the slope character for unique plateau shapes.
This allows you to make precise EQ adjustments over a wide range, quickly and easily, and because all the bands have a 20 Hz to 20 kHz range, you can create your own workflow that suits your approach for processing vocals, drums, guitars, and keys. Meanwhile, there is a FOCUS button, which can be activated to do fine-tuning.
Meanwhile, the dynamics modules in the first and last sections can be switched to Dyn EQ, Dyn Mask, and Compress modes. While Dyn EQ provides basic dynamic EQ functionality, the Dyn Mask uses Frequency Band Waveform (FBW) analysis to find spectral info around the target frequency that may mask it. This method is similar to the DerrEsser, and it ensures the compression happens naturally, even with severe settings.

The Compress mode actually functions as an independent full-band compressor that works separately from the EQ section, which is ideal for channel strip-style workflows. Overall, while the ParaDyn plugin might not have the slickest GUI in town, it certainly combines a range of well-thought-out features.
